Plant Identification Service

The Northern Territory Herbarium plays an important role in providing a plant identification service as well as information and advice on Northern Territory flora. These services are free to members of the public and organisations where the use is for non-commercial purposes.

For students enrolled in a biological science program or equivalent, at a university or other educational institution, arrangements can be made with the facility manager to use the Reference Collection and identification resources to identify plant specimens.

For those wishing to do their own identifications, the reference room at the Palmerston facility must be booked in advance to allow for adequate quarantine of plant specimens that need to be taken into the reference room. As a general rule this can take up to one week. Phone (08) 8999 4516 or email herbarium@nt.gov.au for information and bookings. Those wishing to access the reference collection at the Alice Springs facility should phone (08) 89518791 or (08) 89518792.

Charges apply for the identification of specimens and provision of data where information is to be used for commercial purposes. A charge of $150 plus GST per hour is levied, with a minimum one hour charge applying to all requests.
